Everything You Need to Know About the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival
From the plays to the picnics, the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival truly has something for everyone. You don’t have to be an artist to appreciate the talent that’s presented at this summer-long event. With shows happening nearly every day throughout the season, this is a treat you’ll want to indulge in.
Calendar of Events
Shows begin following the annual gala in June and run until closing night just after Labor Day. This year’s festival showcases five different plays along with a brand new play reading series. Check out the calendar for this year’s full schedule.
“Much Ado About Nothing”
The season kicks off with the Shakespeare original, “Much Ado About Nothing.” Follow the tumultuous love of Beatrice and Benedick as they fight against each other until they finally find love again. The classic play is light, witty, and cunning, and the perfect complement to any date night.
Marvel at the talent of the exciting Shakespeare plot of “Cymbeline.” What is a princess to do when her stepmother is planning to have her killed and her father sits in the shadows? Watch Imogen prevail disguised as a man in this exciting story of happily ever after.
Adapted from the play by Edmond Rostand, “Cyrano” tells the story of a hopeless romantic attempting to win over his childhood sweetheart. Jason O’Connell leads the five-person cast for a show that will leave you laughing and rooting for love.
“Into the Woods”
If musicals are your thing, plan a day to see the hilariously eery “Into the Woods.” The Tony Award-winning Broadway hit highlights the backstories of some of our beloved storybook characters. Audiences will be singing along with the tunes of the play long after the curtain call.
This year’s free family matinee is the Shakespeare classic, “Julius Caesar.” Bring the family out to the tent for a 90-minute production of the tragedy of Caesar. This is the only free performance the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival offers so you’ll want to take advantage of it. Show the kids what theatre art is all about with a one-of-a-kind show.
