Mention of Woodstock brings to mind visions of an incredible music festival that morphed into an experience, one that was life-changing for many. It was a culmination of many cultural elements, channeled through a weekend of music that Joni Mitchell described as “a spark of beauty,” where people “saw that they were part of a greater organization.”
2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, and one of the original organizers, Michael Lang, has organized another Woodstock Music Festival to celebrate it. Learn more below!
The 2019 Woodstock Music Festival
In 1969, the original Woodstock, aka “An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace and Music,” kicked off in Bethel, NY, on a 600-acre dairy farm. It was intended to be a two-day festival that could accommodate 50,000 but quickly grew into something bigger, with ultimately nearly a half-million people attending.
The legendary lineup included several now-famous musicians and groups, including Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, Jimi Hendrix, Richie Havens, Santana, The Grateful Dead, Joe Cocker, Jefferson Airplane, and more—quite the star-studded cast.
Today, the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts stands on the site. A 3-day festival was planned to take place this year, but there instead will be “A Season of Song and Celebration” all summer long. They will still offer special events during the anniversary week, however, including a movie screening and concert.
The location of 2019’s Woodstock is still uncertain—it was originally slated to occur at Watkins Glen, but it may end up closer to the original site. However, the dates are certain: the 2019 Woodstock will take place from August 16th-18th.
You can find some of the artists rumored to be in the lineup at Consequence of Sound’s listing of Woodstock 2019. Stay tuned as the festival gets closer for more updates, including artist lineup and ticket information, which you’ll be able to find on Woodstock’s website.
